Originally a fishing village, San Pedro de Pinatar is now one of the most popular tourist centres on the Mar Menor. The other traditional Occupation of the inhabitants, salt production, has given rise to the present-day nature reserve called Salinas de San Pedro del Pinatar, stretching 6km along the coast. These salt flats and the Encanilzadas that connect to the Mediterranean are the home of many kinds of water fowl and other animals. The port of San Pedro del Pinatar faces out into the Mediterranean and is open to S/SE winds. Care should be taken when approaching, since at the border between Murcia and Alicante, opposite El Mojon, there is a line of reefs called Los Escull that runs almost parallel to the coast about 250m off shore. The port is run by Club Nautico Villa de San Pedro, which is actualy located on the other side of the Manga del Mar Menor, next to Santiago de la Hibera. The club's facilities are only avalable to members. |
